English Cooking Recipes Question And Answer
Cooking For 3rd Graders?
I am considering taking on a 6 week course with a 3rd grade class to show them some basics for cooking. I'm not sure if an oven will be available for us to use. What types of recipes and things could I teach them, outside of introducing them to the utensils and appliances? This is what I am considering:
Lesson 1 - Intro to Cooking: Appliances & Utensils
Lesson 2 - English Muffin Pizza's
Lesson 3 - Chocolate Chip Cookies
Lesson 4 -
Lesson 5 - Brownies
Lesson 6 -
Answers
Flour Tortillas
I would teach them how to make their own healthy snacks, like wraps and sandwiches, how to safely slice an apple and dip it in peanut butter, stuff like that, so when they're home alone they can make a snack without using an oven.
Please add some healthy alternatives like fruit and yogurt parfaits, veggies with dip, applesauce, or trail mix with dried fruits instead of pizza and sweet treats. Our kids eat so much sugar. This is an excellent chance to expand their food choices.
You might want to do a brief lesson about the importance of safe food handling and the importance of washing your hands. You can also incorporate math (measuring ingredients) and reading lessons into the cooking classes.
beef or chicken tacos, spaghetti, grilled cheese, sandwich wraps, chocolate dipped strawberries, banana or chocolate cream pies
Those are things my 3rd grader would enjoy, but beware of boring them with the first lesson, while i agree you would need to teach that, try to keep it fun, if it wasn't, my son would come home and say he was bored and would not want to come back.
... interesting... As a mom, I might be able to offer a few suggestions for you!
Be sure to include SAFETY in the kitchen, stove hot, knives sharp, that sort of information is so important to start off with.
Kids love to measure and stir stuff, so be sure there's lots of that. The messier, the better.
How about Decorating a cake or cupcakes? They could make the frostings themselves, and learn about what colors together make purple? They love that stuff.
Be sure that they get two finished cupcakes in the end... one to eat now and one to show mommy.
Be sure to give the kids copies of the recipes that they make, or a cookbook that they can take home with them. They love to show off what they learned at home and make at home with mom or dad.
One more thing - include some fun recipes that don't require cooking (And waiting which 3rd graders aren't great at) Try making a healthy tossed salad, a fruit salad or trail mix.
Finally, be sure to get some sort of waiver from the parents - make sure there are no kids with peanut or gluten allergies in your class!
Have FUN!
Maybe how to do salads or how to make tail mix? Would a food hydrater would be interesting
Maybe some Popsicles or a granola bar or something like that. Or maybe some easy to make things, like a salad, tortillas, or something else
