English Cooking Recipes Question And Answer

what does an american cup measurement equal to in english cooking?

Just looking at a yummy banana bread recipe but it's in American measurements and was wondering what size American measuring cup is?? Is it like a tea cup or a mug??? is it equivalent to a polystyrene coffee cup etc... ps I’m using American measurements as I don’t have scales so please don’t say 100g! etc.. thanks! :o)

8 ounces is a cup, in Canada anyway. Each kitchen cup holds different measures and can't really be used for baking, as each teaspoon is different also. I suggest you buy a cheap measuring cup and make it easy on yourself. MaggieMay
The amount you can hold in the palm of your hand. Edit: I just had my wife check this out, she reached into the flour bowl and it took 2 handfulls to make 1 cup
1 cup = 1/2 pint U.S. or 8 oz. dry measure. 2 pints=1 quart. 4 quarts = 1 gallon. One pint Imperial measure is 1.2 U.S. pint. Therefore, half a U.S. pint will be a little less than half an Imperial pint. A teacup might be a little light. More like a mug. For reference, The U.S. gallon holds 4 quarts. An Imperial gallon can hold about 5 U.S. quarts.
a cup is 8tablespoons (liquid), in terms of grams 1cup is 125g which is 4ounces. 1 ounce is roughly 1 rounded (heaped tablespoon). good luck I was having the same problem today. this site really helped. good luck nd hope it's delicious
It would come out to a little less than a quarter of a liter. One quart = 32 fl oz One quart = 4 cups 1 cup = 8 oz 1 liter = 33.8 oz 1 liter = 4.225 cups 1 cup = 236.8 mL It comes out to about 237 mL. I'm not sure how you end up measuring things Metric style, but just shoot for a quarter of a liter. A coffee cup would be more than a cup, plus every coffee cup is very different, so it could mess up your recipe. And you can't say a cup equals a certain number of grams. A cup of flour would weigh a lot less than a cup of water and so on.
I don't know about cooking, but I think the American bra cups are the same as the English bra cups. I've never had a chance to compare the full cups side by side, so I can't be absolutely sure. Hope that helps ;-)
If the English & the Americans went metric like most of the world, you wouldn't face this problem
OK, the best way of dealing with this is to forget about equivalents. Find a cup; not a big mug or a small cappuccino cup, just a medium sized cup. Then use that as your "standard" cup measurement. Then only use that cup for everything. You can buy from specialist catering or posh stores a set of cup measures ie: 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup, 1 cup, 2 cups etc. It's all relative as long as you use the same sized cup for everything. I hope this was of help to you.
one american cup equals to an english half pint 16 tablespoons =1cup=8 fluid ozs =half US pint hope this helps
I bought an American cup measure in Ikea. 1 cup is about 1/4 of a litre or 9 fluid ounces. If you've got a standard measuring jug you can follow these measurements. Stef555stef's answer is good, but if your recipe contains eggs then it may not work as your ratios may not be correct, ie, if the recipe calls for 1 egg, then your cake will turn out differently depending on whether you used a large coffee mug or a small teacup.
ellen279 is correct, hope you have a tablespoon for liquid measurements? Will be a little tricky for you though on dry ingredients because: 1 pound of granulated sugar = 2 Cups 1 pound of flour = 4 Cups 1/4 pound of butter = 1/2 Cup 2 Cups of liquid = 1 Pound
you can buy american cup measures in asda
a cup is equal to 8oz of water.
