My dad is German. Tonight for dinner I am having traditional Kranksy with mashed potato & sauerkraut with gravy. Germans like their sausages & their potato. Apple strudel is common. They like liverwurst (spiced pig's liver spread).
schnitzels are my favorite. Basically a breaded meat cutlet.
Have a look at this webpage: http://www.recipezaar.com/r/159/119 Note: Germans have potatoes - no matter how they are prepared - with every traditional meal. Mashed potatoes are very popular. A classic is mashed potatoes with cream spinache and fried eggs. Or mashed potatoes with sauerkraut and bratwurst. Fried potatoes with fried onions and schnitzel. Potato salad hot or cold is a classic. And what you will find at every party are the traditional meatballs. To be served with hot mustard.
Try german.about.com--a great source for all things German I have a cookbook called 'Das Mehl ist anders--The Flour is Different', written by many immigrant families. I no longer remember where I got it, but the AATG might have it in their on-line store. (AATG, American Association of Teachers of German). Much of our ordinary, every day food is of German origin (hot dogs, many sausages, liverwurst, sauerkraut...) Germandeli.com is a good source for German bread and sausages, and they are in a 'webring', which can lead you to other sources. If you have a German-Amerika Klub in your area, they probably also have a cookbook.
