Check out the site below it is full of useful bits on Italian cooking.
I'm Italian and grew up eating meatball soup at least once a week. It's so yummy.
Here's a recipe similar to my mother's, just half the ditalini and add a can of lentils.

For a drink, it's hard to go non-alcoholic Italian. Even the kids would get a shot of amaretto in their coffee!

Zuppa Toscana soup is really good - and pretty easy to make...
* 1lb hot Italian sausage
* 3 cloves garlic, chopped
* 4 large russet potatoes, cut into bite-sized pieces
* 1 3lb 1.5oz can (or 6 cups) chicken broth
* 3 cups water
* 6 cups chopped kale, loosely packed (or fresh spinach works too!)
* 1 cup heavy cream
* + salt & pepper to taste
* freshly grated parmesan to sprinkle on top
On medium heat, brown sausage with garlic. If there is fat left in bottom of pan, drain. Return to heat and add chicken broth, water, potatoes & kale & simmer slowly, uncovered to let stock reduce & flavor develop, about one hour. When potatoes are fork tender, stir in heavy cream.
Spoon into bowls & sprinkle with grated parmesan
OH! and for a drink - I would think that an espresso or an Italian Soda would work great...
Italian sodas are a breeze to make, and they are a very refreshing beverage. Fill a glass ½ way up with ice cubes, add 1 tablespoon of a flavored syrup (fruit flavors are great, such as cherry, peach or raspberry), then fill to the top with seltzer water. Stir and serve!
Italian Sodas?
Cream, tonic water and syrup?
No good Italian food can be made in just 20 minutes. HOWEVER, Progresso makes a pretty good Pasta Fagoli (Prononced Fah-zule), you can spice it up with some herbs and some stock of your own if you'd like).
Plop a bunch of cans of that, in a pot, throw some home-made ingredient in to "mix it up".
Get some olive-oil, some fresh herbs, and some really kick ass Italian bread, some whole olives and some slices of Tomato and Mozzarella with some Balsamic Dressing sprinkle with some basil spices and nobody will care.
For about 35-50 bucks in stuff, you can have a pretty rocking pseudo-Italian - or as my friend calls it - pretend Italian "pretalian".
Progresso's canned soups, and Orangina.
