Japanese soups and noodle salads are really easy to make as long as you have all the right ingredients. They wouls also be perfect for school lunches. Miso soup is just dashi stock with miso paste stirred in at the end of cooking. You can add mushrooms, tofu, wakame seaweed and scallions to it if you like. If you make a dressing with rice vinegar, soy sauce, mirin and a little dashi, you can use it to dress cold noodles ( soba, somen, udon whatever ) to eat as a salad. You can add prawns, daikon, cucumber, scallions, and seaweed to this in whatever combination you like. If you want to try teriyaki cooking then make a marinade of half a cup of soy sauce, half a cup of sake and 4 tablespoons of sugar. Simmer together for 5 mins until syrupy. When it has cooled use it to marinade salmon, tuna, mackerel, chicken or pork. Grill the fish or meat and that's it. Hope this helps.
